Unprecedented post entirely about technology
My computer had some sort of stroke yesterday. It shut down and refused to start up again, no matter what nasty things I said to it. This has happened twice before, and both times it spontaneously resurrected itself after a few hours. Third time has not been the charm, and at the moment, it's as functional as a doorstop. Fortunately, in a surprising burst of advance planning and responsibility, I backed up everything on an external hard drive on Sunday.
I knew I would need a new computer soon, what with the spontaneous shut downs, and the fact that it kept getting slower and slower and louder and louder. So, rather than lose at least a day of work and income to patch it together for a couple of months, it seemed to make more sense to just buy a new one.
The very nice boy at the Mac store, unaware of my extremely low tolerance for all things technological, explained a number of things at great length. He lost me after the first three minutes, but since he was so terribly enthusiastic that I was switching over from a PC, I didn't have to heart to tell him, "Sweetie, I can see your mouth moving, but I have no idea what you are saying. I just want the damn thing to work with an minimum of effort on my part. Chances are excellent that I will never once edit anything with iMovie, and no I do not want to pay extra for a one on one tutorial." The store was packed, and everyone - customers and staff alike - seemed unnaturally excited. I am reasonably certain that I was the only one there who does not own an iPod.
So, I'm blogging from my new MacBook, which I thought might make me cooler. Instead, I am having a very bad hair day and wearing a shirt I pulled out of the dirty laundry because I was late for my 9:00 meeting. Now that I have processed through my bitterness at having to spend money on a new laptop, I think I like it. It was WAY easier to set up and configure than a PC, and it took me about 2 1/2 minutes to transfer all my docs from the hard drive. Also, my old laptop is HEAVY, and carrying this one around does not make my shoulder hurt.
So, I will give my Mac a thumbs up, and maybe I will return eventually to writing posts about things that sort of matter.

Hey Christy! Congratulations on your MacBook. I have one too, bought under identical circumstances, and I absolutely love it. I never thought I could love a piece of technology.
So welcome to the iclub, baby!

I hope I grow to love it - that will cushion some of the shock when the credit card bill arrives.

Yeah for a new laptop! I'm jealous! Dan and I are having a weight -loss competition. The first one to reach the target weight (which is the same for both of us-- um, shouldn't men be heavier than their wives?) gets use of the new Mac laptop which will join our home this summer. Dan is HIGHLY motivated and at this time is a few pounds in the lead. I might never get to touch that Mac.

Welcome to MAC world! I have never owned a PC, so I don't know what it's like to convert. I do know that I've known a lot of people who have switched and have been glad they did!
I bought a Mac when I graduated from college 20 years ago, and I've always bought Macs since then -- It's kinda like my loyalty to Honda. I'm a Mac and Honda kind of gal.

If you've joined the Mac club, then my husband will be doing a happy dance. He's trying to persuade me to join, but my PC hasn't died yet.
And, can't you write off at least part of the Mac on your taxes, since you're self-employed and your employment depends on having a computer? Just a thought, not that I am in any way an expert; more just a rumor I heard about being self-employed.
